The Martian is of course great, but my top recommendation would be Hail Mary. if you're interested in Space-based stories, I highly suggest Andy Wier. There should have been minimal issues in the book if you remove these large holes. The book goes in directions that are set up to cause drama, but if you take a step back, you realize super smart NASA characters, or American military characters, oversee the most basic aspects of their training and common sense to get themselves in these situations. it just feels so unnatural, it doesn't make sense in context. The story drags on quite a bit, and the poor decision making is very jarring. Without going into spoilers, there just isn't any character that I enjoyed. Each one makes poor decisions, spend the entire novel trying to solve mysteries that are obvious, or just aren't good characters. There aren't any characters that you can connect with.
